On the 4th of May, the Dutch commemorate the victims of war. Not only the fallen during the second world war, but war in general. The Dutch stand still for one minute to pay respect and have the deep wish that the Holocaust was the last one-time crime that cost millions of people, especially the jews, their lives.
Today, the 5th of May the Dutch celebrate. They celebrate freedom from war and oppression. They celebrate the freedom that you can be who you want to be, freedom from foreign governments and freedom of authoritative governments. On the 5th of May 1945, the Netherlands was liberated from Nazi Germany and they celebrate the absence of war since in the presence of a well functioning constitutional democracy.
Today, AISS celebrates with them! We are grateful too that we live in a country without war and that we, despite our cultural differences, live peacefully together in one nation.
Happy Freedom Day!!
